Welcome to Culinary Arts 2016-2017

Hello Students,

Welcome to Norview High School Culinary Arts with Chef Felton. Our goal as a class for the 2016-2017 school year is to learn what it means to be a culinarian, and how to continue our growth in the culinary industry well after our time together.

This blog will be used through out the school year for homework assignments, and extra credit as needed. Please take advantage of this resource in anyway you possibly can. Check the blog weekly no later than Wednesday for your homework assignment, any responses turned in after 3 pm on the Friday of each week will not be excepted. Also please be sure to put your proper first name and last initial at the end of all of your response so I know who to give credit to each week.

Discussion topic for week of September 5, 2016:

What made you sign up for Culinary Arts? What do you expect to gain from taking the course? Do you see Culinary as a future career pathway? What is one personal goal you have set for yourself for this school year in Culinary?

I hope you enjoy your time with me as much as I will enjoy my time with you. I look forward to reading and responding to your responses.

Chef Felton

  1. What made me join culinary art was that i wanted to know how to cook and also see what to do in a kitchen. I expect to gain alot more then what i did in intro culinary. I want to go more in depth. No i dont see culinary in my career path i want to be a veterinarian. One goal i have for myself is to me more open and learn new things and explore.

  2. I signed up for Culinary Arts to learn how to create different types of foods as well as learn to make foods I have eaten, but with different tastes. I'm hoping to gain a new way to make foods, learn to make food I have never made, and to find out if I want to make this a career option. At some point of my life I felt that becoming a chef would be a fun choice, but soon lost the passion. Lastly, one goal I have for this class is to pass because I've learned how to create great meals!

    1. I will warn that Culinary Arts is a difficult career path because it is constantly changing. Now chefs are mixing science and food, as well as art. You have many career options if you do find the passion you were missing. You will have many chances to create in this class, just make sure you remain confident throughout the process.

  3. I signed up for culinary arts to lean how to make food as well to try new things. I'm hoping to gain how foods are prepared and make food I've never made before. I'm not sure if culinary is going to be in my future. The one goal I have set is to not give up and try different types of food that I have made and to pass the class.

  5. I chose to take culinary arts because I watch my mom in the kitchen and I help out occasionally. I expect to learn how to prepare different types of food as well as learn about different cultures in the process. As time goes on I may or may not want to pursue Culinary as a career, but I hope to figure it out towards the end of high school. This year two goals I have are to pass this class with an A and to acquire skills that will benefit me later on in life.

I definitely think culinary is a future job option for me because I love to cook and to eat I would also like you to help me get the required skills I need to open a restaurant and get my five stars I need. 7. I signed up for culinary because when I was at my old school the teachers spoke about the culinary arts and since then I've always wanted to try the class, as well as learn the proper techniques of the kitchen. I want to learn how to make different kinds of food as well as learn different techniques and skills, particularly knife skills. I really don't know what I want to do when I'm older, but I don't want to shut down different career paths. Personally, I want to learn how to be safe in the kitchen, as well as being able to make food quickly.

  8. Well to be honest what made me get into this class was because I love food so I thought why not join a class about learning how to make the things I love. What I expect to get out of this class is how to cook things and use utensils the proper way. Culinary isn't what I want to be when I get older but I will keep it in mind just in case my idea switches up. One personal goals is to get in A in this class because if I pass this class and end up wanting to be a chef later on in life at least I know I'll be successful.

  9. The Culinary Arts is a course that I have always wanted to try. I signed up because I’ve heard many stories from family and friends that have taken this class and they’ve always said that it is very exciting. I've also seen many cooking shows on TV and have always wondered what it was like to prepare a full three-course entrée. Next, I expect to gain chef skills from taking this course. In other words, I look forward to knowing how to use cooking utensils properly, how to measure the ingredients correctly, and most importantly how to prepare a delicious meal. Furthermore, if I were to acquire these skills from the course then I could definitely see culinary as a possible career choice. The idea of having a career in the culinary arts is not only inspiring to me but is also an opportunity to other career choices in relation. Finally, one personal goal that I have set for myself this school year in culinary is to simply understand how to prepare food so that in the near future I can prepare tasty meals for myself, my family, and my friends.

  10. Hello Chef Felton the reason i signed up for culinary arts is because i always had an interest in cooking and finally got the opportunity to pursue it. Cooking to me has always been fun i enjoy making nice things. Cooking to me brings out the creativity in people and let them explore a vast new world. Something i expect to gain from this course is a new skill set, cooking experience, and maybe find some new careers in culinary. Yes i can see myself in a culinary field i find it fun but one concern of mine is to explore new careers in culinary other than a chef or culinary teacher. One personal goal i see myself achieving is to fully find out if culinary arts is for me and to pursue it to it's fullest. Eric Jones-Block 1

  11. GoodEvening Chef Felton I signed up for Culinary Arts because I always loved cooking, I always sat in the kitchen and watched my mom, brother, sister and stepfather cook. Before that, I always wondered how food got the nice texture and amazing taste just was curious to see and know about everything I would eat. So when I got a little older I began to become more interested with the cooking field and none of the schools I attended gave me the opportunity to pursue my desire, so that was put on hold sadly! Now that I am in a school that is allowing to jump back into what I LOVE I am going to take the chance and see where it all takes me. I expect to gain more ways to please my family members and friends through my cooking because everyone loves food and it supports the saying, "The way to a person's heart is through their stomach." I also would just like to gain more knowledge and recipes that I could possibly take to a challenge or even to college. I could see myself furthering a career in Culinary Arts but it would just be as a backup plan. One goal I have set for myself this year in culinary arts is to focus and pay attention because I could always have a plan B if plan A does not go as planned also because I won't have to cook the same meals plus it's just good because food makes me happy!

  25. I decided to sign up for culinary arts because I felt that learning how to cook and taste different varieties of foods would be very interesting. I also need this class credit in order to graduate. My mom also thought it would be a good course to take that will keep me on my toes. My dad is a chief so seeing him cook all the time inspired me to want to at least give it a try to see if I like it. My dad always wanted to open his own restaurant so I feel like culinary will give me the basic training I need in order to help him out when it happens. By the time I’m finished with this course I would hope to know how to cook full course meals, meet and learn to work with new people, and gather up some scholarships. Being as though my parents do all the cooking at home I would love to shock them with making some exotic cuisine. I feel like the opportunity with being able to work with new people is versatile because you need those skills no matter what job you do. Sometimes it may be hard with getting along with different people but I believe I can make it work through any situation Meeting new people for me is a bonus I love to mingle and make new friends I am just an all-around outgoing person. The scholarships would be a huge help, because me and my family are not financially stable enough to afford to send me to the college of my choice. I would love to go out of state for college. I think culinary will help open doors for me. I don’t really see me making a career out of culinary because, that is not what I want to do. I have a set goal on getting into one of the many competitions for culinary. I also want to maintain prefect grades in this class.

Some people define this hepatitis by: "HEPATITIS A" is a viral liver disease that can cause mild to severe illness. The HEPATITIS A VIRUS (HAV) is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water or through direct contact with an infectious person. The risk of HEPATITIS A INFECTION is associated with lack of safe water, and poor sanitation and hygiene(such as dirty hands)." The incubation period for hepatitis a is usually 14-28 days. The berries were imported from Egypt. There are between 1,700 and 2,800 cases of the highly contagious virus each year in the united states. HEPATITIS A rates in the united states have declined by 95% since a vaccine became available in 1995, according to the CDC.

  55. The main reason that I joined Culinary Arts was because it is a requirement for me to graduate. From this course, I expect to gain knowledge, interesting studies, and new ideas relating to food and other Culinary related material. Culinary Arts seems like an interesting way to begin one's career, but performing arts and other fields seems to fit me better as an individual. Although, I highly doubt that I won't use what I learn from this class in my everyday life one day. One personal goal for your class and all of my other classes this year is to pass them all with flying colors and graduate high school successfully!

  58. My vegetables are in a drawer in my fridge. My milk and dairy products are on a shelf in my fridge. Everything that should be in my fridge in in my fridge. My milk expires in 2-3 months. Anything that is out of arrangement in my fridge will probably give me a bad stomach, or food poisoning.

  60. I signed up for culinary because ever since I was young I always loved to cook. My dad cooked all the time and I used to help him. I want to gain more experience in the cooking field even though I don't want to do it as a career. I want to be sure I'm cooking my food properly.

  61. I was signed in culinary arts because I didn't need ESL no more but I didn't refuse this class because in my family one of their favorites hobbies and talents is cooking, my aunt knows how to cook delicious foods just by following the procedures... so I wish to be like her or even better by knowing how to prepare, and keep the food safely although I do not want it as a career.

  64. I signed up for Culinary Arts because I wanted to try something I knew I was never really that good in, and step out of my comfort zone into something I knew wouldn't be so easy. I expect to gain cooking skills that will help me later on in my life from this class, and I don't see it as a future career pathway. A personal goal I have set for myself for Culinary Arts is maintaining an A in the class.
